Sport Drinks Sweetened by Fructose (HFCS)

Many of the sport drinks on the market are sweetened by high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). These drinks are touted to you for re-hydration and for replenishment of minerals and other nutrients lost in exercise. These drinks are consumed in abundance by athletes and others. But what is the reality of the use of HFCS? The article in html format: Fructose: Friend or Foe? briefly discusses the potential health problems caused by HFCS. [A link on this page finds the article in pdf format--which contains the graph lacking on the html page cited above.]

I would be careful about the use of HFCS. Plain fructose does on have the problem. Plain corn syrup does not contain fructose. You make the choice. I use other drinks...particularly ones I gin up myself.

Sport Drinks Sweeteners

In the post yesterday I commented about many sport drinks (and other soft drinks) which are sweetened by high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The post directed toward some research and opinion regarding the problems potentially caused by HFCS. Before you run off cheering or cussing, know this. Aspartame (controversy over use of Aspartame) and crystalline fructose also have their problems (although crystalline fructose not so much). Maybe Sucrose or Glucose in moderate amounts are not as bad as they are made out, when one compares the problems with the manner in which fructose is being used. It would seem the jury is still out...although nutritionists have their favorite positions.
