So Called "Energy Drinks"

A study of the effect of high-sugar, low-caffeine "energy drinks" on tests of attention done at Londonborough University in England. The finding was that so called "energy drinks" containing high sugar content do not appear to be effective in maintaining attention. "Sugar rushes" from such drinks don't appear to be very effective at overcoming sleepiness, write Clare Anderson, BSc, Ph.D., and colleagues in Human Psychopharmacology.

Your Flight to the Run

This had little to do with running per se, but those of you who fly to runs out of your area have doubtless experienced the "joys" of air flight. This article, Jet Lagged, found in the New York Times is hilarious....and often too close to true!

Runner Injuries

Running brings the potential of injuries. Some of these are simply due the constant stress placed upon the structural system. Other injuries are a result of "owner-operator" mistakes or carelessness. Poor training, lack of knowledge, or plain egocentric attitude can lead to injuries. Below are a few of the many sites dedicated to helping us all manage our physical/structural system while we enjoy running.

*Injuries A-Z. Offered by Runner's World with excellent links to injury description and treatment.
*Runners Rescue. Contains a good listing of possible injuries and suggestions.
*Common Injuries in Runners. Tips to avoid running injuries offered by About.com.
*Prevention of Running Injuries. Offered by SportsInjuryClinic.net containing recommended treatments for injuries.
*The Anatomy Of A Runner. Runner's World in UK describes the body's components and how they become damaged.

We all know prevention is the best medicine, but if an injury happens, do not forget the basic first aid advise for injury offered by Runner's World RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation).

Running With Your iPod/MP3 Player

What is your take on the controversy? The U.S. governing body for running, USA Track & Field (USATF), officially banned headphones in races. The subject continues to be a hot debate. Although officially banned, many race officials look the other way and some races, such as the Portland Marathon, openly invite runners to use their MP3 players/iPods. Christopher Russell wrote a thoughtful article for Active.com on the subject. What is your take? Next post I will express mine.

My Take On Running With Your iPod/MP3 Player

The MP3 player debate seems mainly to rest on two issues: Liability/Safety and Unfair Advantage.

Liability/Safety: I just returned from the Ukraine where I took a holiday. Interesting country, and very different in some ways from good 'ol USA. Relating to our issue here, if Yuri in Ukraine walks down the street, trips and falls on a bit of sidewalk that is incorrectly protruding, he cannot sue the city or the land owner. It is Yuri's fault for not watching where he put his feet! If a runner fails prudent caution and runs out in front of semi, whose fault is that? The race officials? Or the city or property owner? I think not! We spent too much time in this country being responsible for other people's stupidity and trying to protect them from themselves. On the other hand, if Yuri gets drunk and smashes my car with his, Yuri may go to jail for that, but I will have to repair my own car. How fair is that? NOT!!! There are two sides to the liability/safety issue, but people need to learn to be more self responsible.

Unfair Advantage: It may be that the elite runners up front of the race competing for prize and status should not wear earphone to prevent them from receiving information which could give them an advantage over others. But what about the rest of us? The last time I ran a half marathon I was so blazing fast that five full marathon runners finished ahead of me. Exactly what kind of advantage was I going to receive???

And of course there are other issues and more possible technology to be had and where does it all end...if it will end? My position: Fair competition needs to be protected, but beyond that a runner needs to do what will enhance the journey called running.
