Kilauea Volcano Runs -- Hawai'i

makoa.gifRead the legend of Makoa, the famous Hawaiian runner For the most advanced and hardy endurance runners, the 26.2 mile Volcano Marathon is known as one of the "world's toughest measured marathons." This is a SATURDAY RUN, July 26, 2008, on the big island of Hawai'i. According to Run The Planet Magazine: "The marathon take place off road on unpaved trails in the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The marathon covers extremely rough and uneven terrain, lava fields in a desert area and requires two 1,000 foot elevation changes. Weather can change from cool and dry to torrential downpour during the race. Start at 4,000 foot elevation run down to 3,000 foot and then run back up to finish at 4,000 foot level. Climate and terrain changes from wet, muddy rainforest to dry, hot desert lava fields over course of race. Considered an ultramarathon by many runners."

However, due to volcanic activity at Halema'uma'u Crater, The National Park Service agreed to reroute the two races (marathon & 10 mile) in order to avoid any possible problems associated with the current volcanic activity. The winners on the new course will be setting course records.

There is also a 10 mile and a 5 mile run. OK you Saturday run lovers, Get out to Hawai'i.
