World Record Barely Missed At Flora London Marathon

LEL-2009LondonS.jpg Martin Lel of Kenya won the Flora London Marathon with a time of 2:05:15. Freezing rain and a biting wind at the end of the race may have cost Lel a possible world record. The current world record is 2:04:26 set by Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie on September 30, 2007 at the Berlin Marathon. The top three male finishers in the marathon (Lel, fellow Kenyan Sammy Wanjiru, and Moroccan Abderrahim Goumri) each predicted the world's record will fall after the Beijing Olympics. On the women's side Irina Mikitenko representing Germany won with a time of 2:24:14. It was only her second marathon. Second was Russian Svetlana Zakharova and third was pre-race favorite Ethiopian Gete Wami.
