List Of The World's Healthiest Foods

It is your call if you want to believe this list, but here is a list of 129 foods claimed to be the World's Healthiest Foods. Actually, the list looks good in many respects. Each listed food has a link containing nutritional value and other considerations. The criteria to be named a most healthy food include (quoting from the site):
1. Most Nutrient Dense
2. Are Whole Foods
3. Are Familiar Foods
4. Are Readily Available
5. Are Affordable
6. Taste Good
Take a look.

Let's Talk Nutrition

Two previous posts are of particular interest here. May 1, 2008 "List Of The World's Healthiest Foods" (129 total) and March 28, 2008 "Best Foods for Runners" (15 total). Cross referencing these two lists, you get the following:

1. Almonds
2. Eggs
3. Sweet Potatoes
4. Whole-Grain Cereal with Protein (There are several different grains listed. Here is whole wheat.)
5. Oranges
6. Canned Black Beans
7. Mixed Greens Salad (Several greens listed. Here linked Romaine lettuce.)
8. Salmon (This fish is incredible. Should be eaten every day!)
9. Whole Grain Bread (100% whole grain) (Again wheat here linked, but several whole grains are listed on site.)
10. Frozen Stir-Fry Vegetables (Stir-Fry not listed but numerous vegetables listed on site.)
11. Whole Grain Pasta (Not listed on site...only whole foods listed.)
12. Chicken
13. Frozen Mixed Berries (Here raspberry. Best among the listed berries.)
14. Dark Chocolate (Am I depressed! Chocolate is NOT LISTED!!! Anyone have a razor blade?)
15. Low-Fat Yogurt

Fifteen Best Runner's Food List referenced from article in Runner's World Magazine.

There are numerous other whole foods listed which have as similar or more nutrition as the fifteen listed. Have fun. I have spent hours on the healthy food site and not come close to reading everything.

Edible Flowers

Healthy eating may seem boring. However, my dedicated friend, there is no need to feel stifled watching your friends down tasty early death-producing chow; no need to look at a plain plate of food. Decorate that plate! This site lists edible flowers. The list is too long to quote, so it is linked. Eat healthy, but enjoy yourself.

The Non-runner's Marathon Trainer

Ran across this book: The Non-runner's Marathon Trainer. Thought it has useful tips for those who want to do the distance, but are self-doubting. By the way, the guy in the picture is certainly moving faster than I ever move!

Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon

RimRimBridgeS.jpg This picture found here.
Want to try something different? You trail runners need a wild and interesting new challenge? Try running rim to rim in the Grand Canyon. 11,000 feet change in elevation over the 22 mile trail makes this a very long run (double that if you go Rim to Rim to Rim). The run used to be an organized event, but now it is just your choice to go and do. I have made the hike (when I was much younger) and it was tough then as a hike. This site shows elevation maps as well as a good basic description of trails. Give yourself a tremendous challenge. Great story of one man's rim2rim run.

What Is Your Ideal Weight?

Are you one of the many who wonder about (or even struggle with) what is you idea weight in order to be a the best runner you can be? Here is an article in Runner's World UK written by Amby Burfoot, winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon and long time editor for Runner's World, which may help you with your questions. The article refers to some fitness experts who suggest they would like to banish the whole idea of ideal weight and focus rather upon fitness. STILL...most competitive runners are more concerned about "fastness" than "fitness" when they race. Generally, less weight produces faster times, other thing being equal. It is interesting to note that Dr. Paul Vanderburg, sports physiologist from University of Dayton who has been interested in the weight/fitness issue for years, indicates that weights less than 110 pounds for women and 143 pounds for men are generally not an advantage for decreasing time in a run. Some interesting thoughts.

Sun Valley Half Marathon

SunValHalfPath.jpg The Sun Valley Half Marathon completed Saturday, May 24, 2008. It was a great run. Excellent organizers. Loads of fun.
SunValHalfPathHorse.jpgBeautiful scenic route. Pleasant run between pastoral horse pasture and beautiful homes.
And the ambiance of Sun Valley is great. Even saw California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's "modest" home (I should say 'homes'...there were three on the property). He is doing OK!

Your's truly finished the run dead last (emphasis on "finished"...not "dead" but certainly "last"). Hey...somebody had to do it!

Runner's Handicap Calculator

So you are a more mature runner (that mean older, dude!) and your time is not as good as the younger set. Ever wonder, in any given race, what you might have done if you were 25 and not your age? Need a little help to deal with those younger runner friends who are "polite," but give you the "gaze" when they finish before you? Check out the Flyer Handicap Calculator developed by University of Dayton, Ohio runner and physiologist Paul Vanderburgh.
